From January 23 to 24, 2020, the VIA organized the winter semester excursion for the students of the Lecture "Planning and design of airports II". This year, our destination was Hamburg.

The destination of the first excursion day was the Hamburg-Finkenwerder AIRBUS site. Due to its strategic location on the Elbe, the city of Hamburg plays an important role in the Airbus production network. Dedicated to the company’s Commercial Aircraft branch, they handle structural assembly and equipping of fuselage sections and oversee A320 family’s programm, as well as fitting of cabin interiors and final delivery of A380 family’s programm. Together with an expert from the company, the excursion group visited the hosting facilities of the production lines, where they could see how these aircrafts are assembled and tested.

The following day the excursion group went to the Lufthansa Technik main site located alongside the Hamburg International Airport. At their headquarters, competence and control center, they develop new cabin solutions and improve maintenance and repair methods. Also, Lufthansa Technik’s engine shop in Hamburg is one of the largest workshops for the repair of commercial aircraft engines worldwide. The excursion group was accompanied by various experts during the day on the site, visiting the facilities and experiencing the entire aircraft maintenance process.
